Comparing Hardwood Flooring versus Laminate Flooring

This is a very general comparison between engineered hardwood flooring and laminate flooring to help you to better understand these floor groups. Please note, hardwood flooring comes in some many different species, finishes and construction types and that it is very difficult to place them all in one general category, so pre-finished engineered hardwood flooring is used for this comparison. See your local flooring store for additional advice and recommendations.

Special Note: This is a very general comparison and characteristics will vary depending on the manufacturer and consumer usage. Always read the manufacturer's written brochures for specific product details, recommendations and warranties.

 List of Laminate Flooring Manufacturers

Floors help to protect a home's foundation from damage, so it is important to select a durable flooring material. Laminate floors offer the classic look of wood, at a lower price. Laminate floors are extremely tough and their moisture tolerance allows them to be used in any room, including bathrooms and kitchens. There are many manufacturers of laminate floors, and each one offers specific features.

Pergo

  • Pergo offers laminate floors that resemble many types of wood, including oak, beech and apple. With dual-lock installation, Pergo floors are easy to install and come with a 25-year residential warranty. Pergo floors are sold by national retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe's.
  • Shaw

  • Shaw laminate floors can be installed without the use of glue, thanks to a locking installation system. SilentStep, a special underlayment, helps to reduce sounds made by walking on Shaw Floors. Shaw laminates come in light, medium and dark shades and are made to resemble wood and stone.
  • DuPont

  • DuPont produces laminate floors that look like wood, tile or stone. They are available at Home Depot stores. Although many people prefer traditional woods such as oak and maple, DuPont also offers more exotic laminates. DuPont uses a technology called MicroBevel to make its laminate floors look and feel more like natural materials.
  • Wilsonart

  • Wilsonart laminate flooring is divided into four collections, called Classic, Estate Plus, Red Label and Professional Studio. Classic focuses on traditional types of wood laminates. Estate Plus boasts heavy-duty layers for durability. Red Label is created to resemble specific and distinct styles. Professional Studio mixes different styles with enhanced durability. Wilsonart floors are made in planks and tiles to fit well in any room.
  • Alloc

  • Wood, stone and tile laminate floors are made by Alloc, which offers floors in dull and polished finishes. Alloc also has a locking system that makes its floors simple to install without the use of adhesives. Alloc uses wood scraping and sawdust in its floors to conserve the use of trees.
  • Mohawk

  • Mohawk laminate floors are made to resemble wood, laminate and ceramics. They can be cleaned without the use of wax or abrasive detergents. Mohawk floors are constructed partly out of recycled materials, a practice that helps reduce the number of trees used in making them. A lifetime structural warranty and 25-year moisture warranty are available on some Mohawk floors.
